What Can a Coach Help Me With?

People often ask me, “What is life coaching?”. Although from the inside, I know that almost everyone can benefit from working with a life coach, I also know that many people aren’t exactly sure what a life coach does, so let’s take a look at what is involved in working with a life coach and the benefits of working with one.

A life coach does for the rest of your life what a personal trainer does for your health and fitness - Elain McDonald

In a nutshell, coaches work with you to identify areas in your life that you want to change, create a plan to realize that change, and support you and hold you accountable as you implement that plan.

This may look like you have a goal that you would like to accomplish, like buying a house for example, but the whole process feels overwhelming and because of that, you can’t get yourself to start, or you don't even know where to start. If you were to work with a coach on this goal, the coach would start by asking you questions like “Why do you want to buy a house?”, “How would buying a house improve your life?” or “How will you feel when you are in your new house?”. These questions are important because when we connect to our “why” (why we want to accomplish the goal), we have increased motivation to follow through on all the steps it takes to accomplish the goal.

Once you have connected to your why, it’s time to make an action plan. Through a series of thoughtful questions from your coach, you will develop a first step on your path to accomplishing your goal. Your coach will then guide you as you consider potential obstacles (as well as what you will do if you run into these obstacles), identify people or other resources that can support you, set a timeline, and determine who you will be accountable to for completing the step. When you have successfully completed this first step, you and your coach will then repeat this process as you move through the steps to achieve your goal. And then one day you will wake up and realize you accomplished the goal that you once thought was too overwhelming to start!

This is just one way people work with life coaches. Other ways you might work with a coach are to identify limiting beliefs and change them, create new habits (or break old ones), make life changes and decisions, or get in sync with your higher purpose.

If you are curious about how working with a coach will support you in your quest for awesomeness, let’s have a free discovery session and get started!

With Gratitude,

Rachel
